Description: The light microscope is one of the most ubiquitous instruments in a research laboratory yet most user lack a basic understanding of the instrument. In this lecture, Paul Goodwin will cover the basics requirements for microscopy (magnification, resolution, and contrast) and how those requirements are addressed with a special emphasis on contrast. The lecture will finish with a description of histochemistry and immunohistochemistry as ways of generating contrast with molecular specificity.
